SEC Weekend Preview: Week 3
Week 3 might be the most exciting weekend of the early season.
Multiple neutral-site tournaments. Power-conference crossovers. Draft boards are starting to shape up as the season ramps. And true road tests in hostile environments.
This is where early stat-padding stops mattering.
This is about real competition now.
Alabama
Frisco College Baseball Classic
Friday: vs Iowa
Saturday: vs Oregon State
Sunday: vs Houston
This is a real test for my Bama squad.
Iowa can swing it (batting .375 as a team and 1.024 OPS). Oregon State is a legitimate Omaha contender, and went last year. Houston has some nice arms and can swing it a little.
I’m looking closely at how Alabama’s arms respond outside of Tuscaloosa. If Tyler Fay and Zane Adams want to stabilize that rotation narrative, this is the weekend. Oregon State on Saturday is the real measuring stick, but please do not sleep on Iowa’s bats on Friday. And Myles Upchurch is a real development as a true freshman starting on Sunday’s (right now).
I don’t think Bama sweeps this weekend, but 2–1 would be a strong showing and I think they pull that off.
Auburn
Home vs Nebraska
This is quietly important.
Auburn’s arms — especially Marciano and Sanders — have looked sharp. Nebraska is a solid team and just beat Florida State 10-1 last weekend.
If Auburn is who I think they are, this should be a controlled 2–1 or 3–0 weekend. But Nebraska can grind at-bats, so controlling the game from the mound like they’ve done the first two weeks will matter.
Auburn 2-1.
Arkansas
Home vs UT Arlington
Arkansas should control this series.
I’ll be watching Gabe Gaeckle and how the bullpen lines up behind him. Collin Fisher will look to build off his 8-inning,1-hit CG last weekend, and Hunter Dietz NEEDS to have a good outing for momentum. UT Arlington isn’t elite competition, but Arkansas can’t afford to let a mid-major steal one.
This should be a sweep.
Florida
At Miami
This is one of the most interesting weekends in the SEC.
True road environment. In-state rivalry. Talent on both sides.
Liam Peterson’s bounce-back week now gets tested. Miami can swing it for real and Daniel Cuvet is future big-leaguer anchoring that line-up.. Florida’s rotation depth matters here, and look for Cooper Walls to bounce back on Sunday for what will likely be an important game for the series.
This is a 2–1 either way series for me. I’ll lean Florida (Kevin O’Sullivan owns Miami since being at UF) taking two, but this won’t be easy.
Georgia
Home vs Oakland
Georgia should handle this.
The question for me is whether Georgia separates early or lets this linger into the middle innings. When you let a mid-major hang around long enough, it gives them confidence — and the longer they stay in it, the more they feel like they can compete with an SEC team.
Oakland is a scrappy club. Even if they haven’t stacked wins yet, I’ve been around this team a lot this year, and they’re excited to come down and take on the challenge.
This should still be 3–0, but Georgia needs to be clean early.
Kentucky
Home vs St. John’s
This weekend is bigger than just “handling business.”
With the absence of Tyler Bell, Kentucky’s leadership has to show up. The senior presence and the transfer group need to take over, and this team has to prove it can win a solid series against a good, disciplined opponent.
Jaxon Jelkin headlines it. The starting pitching needs to dominate, because St. John’s will fight for every inning.
I’ll also be watching Kentucky’s identity: if they steal bags, make consistent contact, and play their brand of baseball, they can overwhelm teams like this.
If they play Kentucky-style baseball, they sweep.
LSU
Home vs Dartmouth & Northeastern
LSU should dominate this weekend.
Northeastern won 39 games last year too, so this is not because LSU is just better than these two teams. This is more about internal development than competition, and the biggest storyline for me continues to be Casan Evans. He’s still in that transition from reliever to starter, and I’m watching whether his velocity holds through five or six innings — and how he looks the second and third time through the order.
If LSU is sharp, this is 4-0. I think LSU comes out motivated, they’re build for weekend series’ and their depth going into Monday is what gives them an edge, for me.
Either way, LSU should control the weekend.
Missouri
Home vs North Dakota State
Missouri has to stack wins here.
Javyn Pimentel continues developing as the Friday guy. This is not a flashy matchup, but Missouri needs consistency before conference play.
Should be a sweep, and I’m driving the Mizzou bandwagon!
Oklahoma
Home vs Gonzaga
Oklahoma’s arms have looked electric.
Cam Johnson and LJ Mercurius are in rhythm, and I also want to keep highlighting Cord Rager — a true freshman Sunday arm who looks like a stud and is helping Oklahoma quietly build one of the most complete early-season rotations in the league.
Gonzaga is competitive, but Oklahoma’s pitching depth should be too much.
I expect 2–1 minimum, likely 3–0.
South Carolina
At Clemson
One of the best environments of the weekend.
True rivalry road series. Clemson is really good and that scares me for one of my mentor’s in Paul Mainieri and his South Carolina squad.
This is a gut-check weekend for South Carolina. They’ve looked ok at times, but at other times, they have looked lost and dropped games to Army and Queens. Clemson’s lineup will test their staff, and Clemson has a legit ace on Friday.
I think this goes 2-1 Clemson, but I am rooting for South Carolina, hard.
Tennessee
AMEGY Bank College Baseball Series
Friday: vs UCLA
Saturday: vs Arizona State
Sunday: vs Virginia Tech
This is massive — and it’s a real test of who Tennessee is right now.
Tegan Kuhns is going to be tested, and the margin for error is smaller than it’s been so far. UCLA is the number one team in the country for a reason, Arizona State is no joke (especially after what they showed in the midweek against Oklahoma), and Virginia Tech is ok.
I could absolutely see Tennessee going 1–2 here. They could easily drop games to UCLA and Arizona State if they don’t play clean. This weekend is critical for how they respond when the competition is real and the environment is neutral-site pressure.
Mississippi State
AMEGY Bank College Baseball Series
Friday: vs Arizona State
Saturday: vs Virginia Tech
Sunday: vs UCLA
Brutal draw — but I actually think Mississippi State has the most upside in the country right now.
If they sweep this field — Arizona State, Virginia Tech, UCLA — they can make a real case to jump into the No. 1 conversation depending on what happens elsewhere.
Ryan McPherson gets real competition now. This is where we find out if the stuff plays the same when the lineup is mature.
And honestly? I think they win all three.
Ole Miss
Bruce Bolt College Classic
Friday: vs Baylor
Saturday: vs Ohio State
Sunday: vs Coastal Carolina
This is a sneaky big weekend for Ole Miss.
Hunter Elliott will look to bounce back from an uncharacteristic outing as he continues to anchor the staff, but the real storyline for me is Cade Townsend. From a pure stuff standpoint, he might have the loudest arsenal on this team right now. Mid-90s, four legitimate pitches, and the ability to miss bats in bunches. If he continues trending the way he has the last two weeks, Ole Miss’ rotation could be solid.
Baylor and Ohio State are good program tests. Coastal Carolina is experienced having going to the CWS finals last year and knows how to win tight games, although they will be without their two best starting pitchers. That Sunday matchup could easily turn into a statement opportunity.
Ole Miss has the arms to go 3–0 here. But they can’t let games linger. If they separate early and force these teams to play from behind, their pitching depth becomes a real advantage.
If the Rebels walk out of this weekend 2–1 or better, with Townsend continuing to flash that upside, the narrative around their staff changes quickly heading into conference play.
Texas
Bruce Bolt College Classic
Friday: vs Coastal Carolina
Saturday: vs Baylor
Sunday: vs Ohio State
Texas has looked like a complete club, but this is a very real slate.
Ruger Riojas is pitching like a big leaguer right now. His stuff is looking like a very good big leaguer — he controls the pace, commands multiple weapons, and doesn’t look rattled. Plus the flow and ‘stache has to be factored into the intimidation factor HAHA!
In all seriousness, Coastal is experienced and could be dangerous playing with a chip since they’re all banged up with injuries. Baylor can compete and will be a fun throw back rivalry game. Ohio State is a Big 10 team, who plays good competition.
Texas can still dominate, but this weekend is a true test — and one that will tell us exactly how real they are. I think they go 3-0 and we start talking about them as the #1 team in the country.
Texas A&M
AMEGY Bank College Baseball Series
Friday: vs Virginia Tech
Saturday: vs UCLA
Sunday: vs Arizona State
Arguably the toughest slate of the weekend — and also the biggest opportunity.
Shane Sdao needs to back up last week’s outing, and A&M’s depth will be tested in a way that actually matters.
I love the statement potential here. If A&M plays clean and their arms show up, they can walk out of this weekend with a major national-level message.
I think they will. I picked them to go 3-0 on Glue Guys yesterday so I am staying with it and manifesting a big weekend for the Aggies.
Vanderbilt
Live Like Lou Las Vegas Classic
Friday: vs UC Irvine
Saturday: vs Arizona
Sunday: vs Oregon
This is sneaky competitive.
Arizona has started brutal, but they went to Omaha last year and I picked them to go back this year before injuries have crushed them. Oregon can score and will pitch it. UC Irvine is well-coached and clean defensively, and a team a lot of people picked to contend to go to Omaha.
Connor Fennell has to set the tone Friday. Austin Nye has to have his nasty shit on Saturday again, and Vanderbilt’s bullpen depth will matter in Vegas. I am looking to see if the power is for real with this Vandy team, as well.
2–1 feels likely and would be a good showing.
The Headliners
If I had to circle the five most important games of the weekend:
Tennessee vs UCLA (Friday)
Texas vs Coastal (Friday)
Florida at Miami (Friday)
Alabama vs Oregon State (Saturday)
Mississippi State vs Coastal (Sunday)
This weekend is less about sweeping and more about proving. I think the SEC shows well this weekend with these matchups.
