SEC Friday Night Round-Up
SEC Teams Go 15-1 on Friday Night
The League Flexed (15–1), But Let’s Talk About What Actually Matters
The SEC went 15–1 on Friday night.
The lone loss? South Carolina falling to Army, 9-4.
Outside of that? The league looked deep. But more importantly — the Friday night arms looked real.
Let’s run through it.
Kentucky — Jelkin Is Built For This
I will do a longer, in-depth breakdown on Jaxon Jelkin’s outing, but it’s worth reinforcing here:
5 IP. 69 pitches. 7 Ks. One mistake homer. He is one of my favorite pitchers from a stuff, upside, and Friday night role perspective.
The stuff is real. The demeanor is better. And when he gave up traffic in the fifth, he erased it with a double play and a three-pitch strikeout.
That’s Friday night DNA.
Kentucky won 9-2.
LSU — Calm Chaos
LSU beat Indiana 14–7 in Jacksonville.
But this wasn’t a wire-to-wire cruise.
They were down 5–4 heading into the 8th. Then LSU exploded for nine runs.
Gavin Guidry gets the win. Zach York hit a big homer. Derek Curiel had three knocks. When LSU smells blood, they avalanche.
That said — giving up seven runs and trailing late isn’t what you want long term. But the response? That’s championship-level offense.
Vanderbilt — Slow Burn
Vandy handled Marist, but it wasn’t clean early and the game was even tied after three innings.
Connor Fennell went 5 IP, 2 ER, 7 Ks. He did give up two home runs — and yes, the ball was flying a bit — but he looked like a Friday night starter.
The interesting piece? Vanderbilt gave up five runs to Marist.
The bullpen depth is what I’ll be watching this weekend.
Vandy won 16-5.
Georgia — Businesslike
Georgia run-ruled Samford 11–1.
Joey Volchko: 6 IP, 1 ER, 8 Ks.
That’s how you take care of a series you’re supposed to control.
Arkansas — Quietly Solid
Arkansas beat Xavier 5–2.
Gabe Gaeckle gave them 5 innings and 7 Ks.
Not flashy. Just solid. Xavier can swing it a little, so holding them to two runs is real work, and their schedule is no joke so Arkansas does not intimidate a team like Xavier. Good win.
Tennessee — Survive and Walk It Off
This one had drama.
Tennessee blew the lead in the top of the 9th against Kent State.
Then walked it off in the bottom half.
Teagan Kuhns had some command lapses but looked solid. The bullpen deserves real credit.
Brady Frederick coming in and getting two outs with the bases loaded after the lead evaporated? That’s massive for momentum.
That’s the kind of sequence that carries into the bottom of the 9th for a walk off homer, and then into Saturday.
Tennessee won 4-3.
Alabama — Statement Offense
Alabama crushed Rhode Island 19–4.
Tyler Fay looked sharp for five innings. 92–95 with good angle. Tall downhill presence. Gave up three in his final frame, but overall? Looks the part.
And then there’s Justin LeBron.
Two home runs, five RBIs and eight steals already this season.
That’s first-overall-pick type impact, just saying…
Mississippi State — Power Arm
Mississippi State did what they were supposed to do and beat Delaware 9–2.
Ryan McPherson: 6 IP, 11 Ks.
That’s a true power arm: 96–98 and a breaking ball with bite + a changeup that plays. Struck out the side in the 6th after allowing a leadoff infield single, and was fired the fuck up and that fired me up. I like this kid.
That’s a real SEC weapon.
Oklahoma — Loud
22–1 over Coppin State.
Cam Johnson: 5 IP, 7 Ks.
Didn’t walk anyone, but worked deep counts. Lots of 2-2, 3-2. That’s nitpicking — he’s a stud — but that’s the refinement I’m watching.
Oklahoma looks complete early, and I’ll leave it there because I been very excited ab out them. Fired up for Mercurius’ start today.
Ole Miss — Offense Covers
Ole Miss beat Missouri State, which is not a bad team.
Hunter Elliott had some command issues, but the bats showed up.
Eddie Furniss and Judd Utermark in the 2–3 hole? That’s a real problem. Utermark hit two homers….again.
Ole Miss might be more balanced than people think. They beat Missouri State 11-6 in the opener.
Missouri — Interesting Arm Emerging
Missouri handled New Haven 12-2.
Javin Pimentel: 5 IP, 10 Ks. This is a development I am going to watch: he’s a lefty coming off injury. He’s a transfer from a strong program. If he stabilizes Friday nights for them, that changes Missouri’s ceiling…. a little.
Florida — Bounce Back
Liam Peterson responded.
5 1/3 IP. 12 Ks.
That’s what you want from your first-round arm after a shaky opener. Florida beat Kennesaw State 9–3, and controlled the game. Peterson definitely still struggles with pinpoint command but his stuff is so electric, he gets swings and misses a lot. Against better teams, I will look for him to command the zone even more and get even better. Scary.
Texas A&M — Pitching Duel
A&M wins 1–0 in the 9th over UPenn.
Shane Sdao was outstanding. 7 IP. Low 90s from the left side, but the sweeper made the fastball play up, and has a change-up to compliment them.
Lots of uncomfortable swings. That’s SEC-ready sequencing.
Texas — Big League Feel
Texas beat Michigan State 8-1.
Ruger Rios: 6 IP, 10 Ks, 1 ER.
The scouting report says eight pitches. I don’t know if it’s eight distinct offerings — but I know he throws four legitimate plus pitches for strikes.
He looks like a big leaguer, and I will be watching every one of his starts because he is electric and fun to watch.
Texas looks complete.
Auburn — The Most Interesting Arm of the Night
Kansas State came in red-hot.
Jake Marciano shut it down.
6 IP. 8 Ks. 2 hits. 0 walks.
Lefty transfer from Virginia Tech. His fastball won’t “wow” you from a velocity standpoint — but it’s got serious IVB. The spin plays. You could see hitters take bad swings under it.
The sweeper pairs perfectly and the changeup is a real above-average offering as well.
That’s a Friday night guy.
I’ll have a full breakdown coming, because there’s real upside there, as Auburn wins on Friday 5-1.
What To Watch Saturday & Sunday
Does Cooper Moore dominate for LSU again?
Does Vanderbilt’s bullpen tighten?
Does LJ Mercurius look as dominant?
Can Tennessee avoid late-game drama?
Does Auburn stack another dominant start behind Marciano’s outing?
Is Texas officially the most complete team in the league?
Does Zane Adams dominate again?
How does Hunter Dietz bounce back for Arkansas?
Does Austin Nye have the same elite stuff I saw last weekend?
How does Dylan Volantis look in his second start?
The SEC went 15–1.
But more importantly?
The league looks deep on the mound.
And in this conference, Friday night arms are everything.
